How to Cut Crown Molding
Because crown molding sits at an angle against the wall, you can't just lay it flat and cut it like a baseboard. There are two ways tradesmen handle this on the job site:
1. Cutting Upside Down on the Fence
This is the fastest method. You hold the crown molding upside down, propped up against the back fence of the saw exactly how it sits on the wall. The saw blade stays straight up and down (0° bevel), and you just turn the table to a standard miter angle (like 45°). Use the Standard Cut mode above for this.
2. Laying Flat on the Saw
If you are using massive 6" or 7" crown molding, it might be too tall to prop up against your fence. In this case, you have to lay it completely flat on its back on the saw table. To make the cut work, you have to turn the saw table AND tilt the saw blade sideways. Use the Crown Molding (Laying flat) mode above to get these two exact numbers.

What is a spring angle for crown molding?
The spring angle is the angle at which the crown molding sits against the wall. The most common spring angle in the US is 38 degrees (often labeled 38/52). 45 degrees is also common, especially for smaller profiles.
Do I cut crown molding flat or nested?
You can cut it either way. If your saw is large enough, cutting "nested" (propped up against the fence exactly how it will sit on the wall) is easiest because it only requires a simple miter cut. If your saw is too small, you must cut it lying flat on the saw table, which requires a compound cut (both miter and bevel angles adjusted).
How do I measure the wall corner angle?
Use an angle finder or a digital protractor in the corner. A perfect square corner is 90 degrees. If the corner is slightly off, like 88 or 92 degrees, enter that exact number to get the perfect cut angles.
What is the miter angle for an octagon?
For a perfect octagon (8 sides), the corner angle is 135 degrees. A simple miter cut to join two pieces at that angle is 22.5 degrees.
