How to Use the Spacer Block Method
The fastest way to install wainscoting perfectly isn't by measuring and marking every single stile on the wall—it's by using spacer blocks.
1. Cut Your Blocks
Use the "Panel Width" calculated above and cut two blocks of scrap wood to that exact length. Make sure your cuts are perfectly square.
2. Stack, Level, and Shoot
Place your spacer blocks tightly against the previous batten (one near the top, one near the bottom). Press your next batten tight against the blocks, verify it is plumb with a level, and shoot it into the wall with a brad nailer.
The Math Behind Wainscoting Layout
Unlike fence pickets which sit inside a span, a classic wainscoting wall starts with a stile (batten) on the far left and ends with one on the far right. Because of this, there is always one more batten than there are panels.

How do you calculate equal spacing for battens?
To calculate equal spacing, you add the width of one batten to the total wall width, then divide by the target gap plus the batten width. This gives you the number of spaces. You then subtract the total width of all battens from the span and divide by the number of spaces to find the exact gap size.
Do I measure center-to-center or edge-to-edge?
The visual space between the battens is the physical edge-to-edge gap. However, when laying out and installing the battens on a wall, marking center-to-center measurements on your wall is often the easiest and most accurate method.
